As a professional Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs tailored to the unique challenges of an industrial setting. Your expertise will be crucial in identifying potential hazards, conducting thorough risk assessments, and enacting preventative measures. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and procedures aligned with Jamaican regulations and international best practices.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement within the industrial estate.
- Perform detailed risk assessments for various operational activities, machinery, and work environments, proposing effective control measures.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventative actions.
- Organize and deliver engaging safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors, covering topics such as emergency preparedness, fire safety, first aid, and hazardous material handling.
- Ensure all safety equipment, including PPE, is properly maintained, inspected, and readily available.
- Advise management on OHS matters, ensuring legal compliance and promoting a proactive safety culture.
- Prepare and submit accurate OHS reports to management and regulatory bodies as required.
- Manage and maintain safety documentation, including permits, certifications, and incident records.
- Liaise with external regulatory bodies during inspections and ensure all compliance requirements are met.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican OHS regulations (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA principles) and international safety standards.
- Demonstrable experience in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Strong understanding of industrial hazards and control measures.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Internationally recognized safety certification (e.g., NEBOSH Diploma, OSHA certification, IOSH Managing Safely).
- Experience with safety management systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Familiarity with environmental management practices within an industrial setting.
