Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook a variety of daily meals, including local and continental dishes, for staff members, ensuring high standards of taste, quality, and presentation.
- Assist in the development and rotation of canteen menus, considering nutritional balance, cost-effectiveness, and staff preferences.
- Manage food inventory, including ordering ingredients, receiving supplies, and minimizing waste through proper storage and utilization.
- Ensure strict adherence to all food safety, hygiene, and sanitation regulations (HACCP principles) within the kitchen and serving areas.
- Operate and maintain kitchen equipment safely and efficiently, reporting any malfunctions or repair needs promptly.
- Collaborate effectively with other kitchen staff and canteen management to ensure smooth daily operations and service delivery.
- Monitor food portioning to ensure consistency and control costs without compromising on quality.
- Maintain a clean and organized workstation, ensuring all kitchen areas are tidy and hygienic at all times.
- Adhere to established recipes and cooking procedures, while also demonstrating creativity in meal preparation.
- Assist with special catering requirements or events as needed within the canteen.
- Provide excellent customer service to staff members during meal service periods.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Cook, preferably in a high-volume canteen, restaurant, or institutional kitchen.
- Thorough knowledge of food preparation techniques, cooking methods, and kitchen equipment operation.
- Strong understanding and practical application of food safety and hygiene standards.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- A keen eye for detail and commitment to producing high-quality meals.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well within a team.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift heavy pots/ingredients.
- Ability to adapt to changing menus and dietary requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- A formal culinary qualification or certificate from a recognized institution.
- Experience with inventory management and cost control in a kitchen setting.
- Knowledge of various Nigerian and continental cuisines.
- Basic computer literacy for inventory tracking or ordering systems.
- Previous experience working in an educational institution's catering service.
