Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor robust Health & Safety management systems, policies, and procedures specific to an industrial estate environment.
- Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identification, and safety audits across all operational areas, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.
- Ensure strict compliance with local occupational safety and health legislation (e.g., Jamaica's Factories Act, OSH standards) and international best practices.
- Lead and coordinate incident investigations, including near-misses, accidents, and occupational diseases, identifying root causes and implementing preventative measures.
- Deliver comprehensive health and safety training programs to employees, contractors, and visitors, covering topics such as emergency preparedness, machinery safety, hazardous materials handling, and ergonomic practices.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, permits, and documentation, ensuring readiness for internal and external audits.
- Manage emergency response plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures, conducting regular drills and ensuring equipment readiness.
- Advise management on health and safety performance, regulatory changes, and strategies for continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with department heads and operational teams to integrate safety into daily operations and project planning.
- Oversee the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste, adhering to environmental regulations.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or heavy industry setting.
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and standards in Jamaica.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies, incident investigation techniques, and hazard control principles.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills for conducting training and engaging with diverse teams.
- Proficiency in developing and implementing H&S management systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Ability to conduct thorough site inspections and audits with attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent recognized safety qualification.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Familiarity with permit-to-work systems and confined space entry procedures.
- Fluency in local Patois is a plus for effective communication with all levels of staff.
