Job Description

Phoenix Beverages Ltd is seeking a proactive and dedicated Public Health Officer with a strong focus on safety and awareness to enhance our existing health and safety frameworks. This critical role is designed to ensure a safe, healthy, and compliant environment for all our employees, visitors, and operations within our facilities and beyond. The Public Health Officer will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive public health programs, with a particular emphasis on infectious disease prevention, occupational health, hygiene standards, and community awareness initiatives.

You will be responsible for conducting thorough risk assessments, identifying potential public health hazards, and designing effective preventative measures to mitigate these risks. A key aspect of this role involves developing and delivering engaging training sessions and awareness campaigns to educate our diverse workforce on best practices in public health, safety protocols, and emergency preparedness. This includes promoting personal hygiene, proper waste management, food safety standards (where applicable within our canteens/facilities), and general well-being. The ideal candidate will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant local and international public health and occupational safety regulations, acting as a liaison with health authorities when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive public health and safety programs in line with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential health hazards within the workplace and propose effective control measures.
  • Design and deliver training programs and awareness campaigns on public health issues, hygiene practices, and safety protocols for all employees.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with local and international public health and occupational safety legislation and standards.
  • Investigate public health incidents, near misses, and occupational diseases, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain emergency preparedness plans related to public health crises (e.g., pandemics, outbreaks).
  • Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., HR, Operations, Quality Assurance) to integrate health and safety best practices.
  • Oversee waste management protocols, sanitation standards, and environmental hygiene within company premises.
  • Maintain accurate records of health and safety activities, training, incidents, and audit results.
  • Serve as a point of contact for health authorities and facilitate external audits and inspections.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing public health and safety programs.
  • In-depth knowledge of Mauritian public health and occupational safety regulations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments and implement effective mitigation strategies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Public Health or a related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, HACCP).
  • Experience in the manufacturing or food & beverage industry.
  • Fluency in English and French (Creole is an advantage).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
