Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Engineer to join our dynamic team in Karoi, Mashonaland West Province. The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental management systems and strategies across our operations, particularly within our farming support and processing units. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of environmental regulations, sustainable agricultural practices, and industrial compliance. You will be instrumental in ensuring MTC’s operations adhere to local and international environmental standards, mitigate environmental risks, and drive continuous improvement in our sustainability performance. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in accordance with ISO 14001 standards and local regulations.
- Conduct regular environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and audits of company operations, including farms, processing facilities, and storage depots.
- Monitor key environmental performance indicators (EPIs) related to water usage, waste management, energy consumption, and emissions.
- Design and implement programs for waste reduction, recycling, and safe disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant national environmental laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on environmental best practices to operational teams and contractors.
- Prepare comprehensive environmental reports for internal stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
- Investigate environmental incidents, recommend corrective actions, and track their implementation.
- Develop and deliver environmental awareness training programs for employees.
- Collaborate with community stakeholders, regulatory authorities, and industry associations on environmental initiatives.
- Stay abreast of emerging environmental technologies, legislation, and sustainability trends to recommend improvements.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in environmental management, preferably in an agricultural or industrial setting.
- In-depth knowledge of Zimbabwean environmental legislation and international environmental standards (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Proven experience in conducting EIAs, environmental audits, and developing EMS.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to various operational sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant environmental discipline.
- Professional certification in environmental management (e.g., EMS Lead Auditor, EIA Practitioner).
- Experience with GIS software for environmental mapping and analysis.
- Familiarity with agricultural sustainability standards (e.g., Good Agricultural Practices).
- Knowledge of water resource management and pollution control technologies.
