Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and responsible Hostel Caretaker to join our team, offering on-site accommodation in the vibrant heart of Victoria Island. This full-time role is crucial for maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our residents. As the Hostel Caretaker, you will be the primary point of contact for day-to-day operations, ensuring the smooth running of facilities and fostering a positive community atmosphere. Your duties will span across facility management, resident support, and security oversight, making you an indispensable part of our operational success.

We are looking for an individual with a strong sense of ownership, excellent interpersonal skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will be responsible for upholding high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, conducting routine inspections, and coordinating necessary repairs to ensure all amenities are in excellent working condition. Beyond maintenance, you will play a vital role in resident relations, addressing inquiries, mediating minor disputes, and ensuring adherence to hostel policies, thereby contributing significantly to a harmonious living space.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections of hostel facilities, common areas, and individual rooms to ensure cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry) and coordinate with external contractors for major issues.
  • Ensure all hostel utilities (water, electricity, waste management) are functioning correctly and report any disruptions promptly.
  • Manage resident inquiries, concerns, and complaints professionally and efficiently, mediating conflicts when necessary.
  • Oversee the security of the premises, including monitoring CCTV, managing access control, and enforcing safety protocols.
  • Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies, maintenance tools, and other hostel necessities, ensuring timely replenishment.
  • Enforce hostel rules and regulations, ensuring a respectful and orderly living environment for all residents.
  • Assist with resident check-ins and check-outs, including room preparation and inspection.
  • Respond to emergencies (e.g., medical, fire, security incidents) promptly and effectively, coordinating with relevant authorities.
  • Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, incidents, and resident communications.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a caretaker, facility management, or similar role.
  • Basic handyman skills for minor repairs (plumbing, electrical, carpentry).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with residents and staff.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to facility issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated reliability, trustworthiness, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Previous experience working in a hostel, student accommodation, or hospitality environment.
  • Knowledge of local health and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with basic property management software.
  • Ability to speak local languages (e.g., Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo) is a plus.
