Key Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with daily personal care activities, including bathing, dressing, grooming, and feeding.
  • Support patient mobility, transfers, and positioning using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Monitor and accurately record vital signs, intake/output, and report any changes in patient condition to nursing staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of patient rooms, common areas, and medical equipment.
  • Assist nurses and other medical professionals with procedures and treatments under direct supervision.
  • Ensure adequate stock levels of medical supplies, linen, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Transport patients, specimens, and equipment safely within the hospital premises.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to patients, fostering a comforting and respectful environment.
  • Adhere strictly to all hospital policies, health and safety regulations, and infection control protocols.
  • Document care provided and observations accurately and promptly in patient records.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrable empathy and compassion for patients.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks requiring bending, lifting, and prolonged standing.
  • Basic computer literacy for record-keeping.
  • Attention to detail and a proactive approach to patient care and ward maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Prior experience (at least 6 months) in a hospital, clinic, or elderly care setting.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Fluency in additional local languages (e.g., Sepedi, Tsonga) relevant to the Polokwane community.
  • Completion of a recognized Healthcare Assistant or Auxiliary Nurse training program.
