Career.zycto is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health & Safety Officer to oversee and enhance safety protocols within a prominent industrial estate in Montego Bay, St. James. This professional role is critical to ensuring a safe, compliant, and productive environment for all personnel, visitors, and operations within the estate. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety management systems, policies, and procedures in alignment with local regulations and international best practices.
Working proactively, you will conduct regular risk assessments, identify potential hazards, and implement effective control measures to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring that all industrial activities, including manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, and maintenance, adhere to the highest safety standards. You will lead safety training initiatives, fostering a strong safety culture among employees and contractors. This role demands a keen eye for detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence positive behavioral change across diverse groups. You will also be the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies concerning health and safety matters, preparing and submitting all necessary reports and documentation. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain robust Health & Safety management systems, policies, and procedures in compliance with Jamaican OSH regulations and international standards.
- Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigations, implementing corrective and preventive actions.
- Perform routine site inspections and audits to ensure adherence to safety standards, equipment maintenance, and safe work practices within the industrial estate.
- Lead and facilitate comprehensive safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and new hires, covering topics such as emergency preparedness, first aid, fire safety, and hazard communication.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental regulations pertinent to industrial operations within the estate.
- Manage and maintain accurate safety records, including incident reports, training logs, inspection findings, and regulatory documentation.
- Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies (e.g., Ministry of Labour and Social Security) on all health and safety matters.
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure its proper usage and maintenance.
- Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and continuous communication.
- Develop and manage emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and first aid protocols.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in a Health & Safety role, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislation and international safety standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
- Proven experience in conducting risk assessments, hazard analysis, and incident investigations.
- Strong understanding of industrial processes, machinery safety, and material handling.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to train and influence diverse groups.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective safety programs and initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certification such as NEBOSH, CSP, or equivalent.
- Experience with environmental management systems and sustainability practices.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Fluency in additional languages relevant to the workforce (e.g., Spanish).
