Key Responsibilities
- Assist the lead tailor with garment alterations, repairs, and fittings for customers and store inventory.
- Perform basic sewing tasks efficiently, including hemming, mending, stitching, and minor adjustments to clothing items.
- Operate and maintain various sewing machines (e.g., domestic, industrial, overlockers) and other tailoring equipment safely and effectively.
- Accurately measure and mark fabrics according to customer specifications or pattern requirements.
- Cut fabrics and patterns under supervision, ensuring minimal waste and precise execution.
- Ensure the timely completion of all assigned tailoring tasks while maintaining consistently high quality standards.
- Organize and maintain the tailoring workspace, keeping it clean, tidy, and efficient at all times.
- Handle and care for various types of fabrics and materials, understanding their properties and handling requirements.
- Assist with inventory management of tailoring supplies, threads, notions, and accessories.
- Communicate effectively and courteously with customers to understand their alteration needs and provide updates when required.
- Adhere strictly to all company policies, safety procedures, and quality control guidelines.
- Contribute to a positive team environment by supporting colleagues and collaborating on tasks.
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of sewing techniques and garment construction principles.
- Proficiency in operating domestic and/or industrial sewing machines.
- Strong attention to detail and precision in all aspects of work.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Good manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Effective time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic communication skills in English and/or Sesotho for internal and external interactions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training, certificate, or diploma in tailoring, fashion design, garment technology, or a related field.
- Previous experience (even informal) in a retail alteration shop, dry cleaner, or professional tailoring environment.
- Familiarity with various fabric types, their characteristics, and appropriate handling methods.
- Prior experience in a customer service role within a retail setting.
- Knowledge of current fashion trends and garment fitting techniques.
