Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Quantity Estimator specializing in building costs to join our dynamic team in Kisumu, Kisumu County. This pivotal role involves providing comprehensive cost estimates and financial advice throughout the project lifecycle, from initial conceptualization to final completion. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in ensuring the economic viability and cost-effectiveness of various building projects, contributing significantly to our clients’ success and our firm’s reputation for excellence in the construction sector.

As a Quantity Estimator, you will be at the forefront of project planning, responsible for preparing accurate and competitive bids, tenders, and proposals for a diverse range of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects. This entails meticulous analysis of architectural drawings, structural plans, specifications, and other tender documents to precisely quantify materials, labor, and equipment requirements. A critical aspect of your role will be engaging proactively with a network of suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotes, negotiating favorable terms, and building robust cost databases. You will also perform thorough risk assessments related to cost variations and schedule impacts, developing contingency plans and value engineering proposals to optimize project costs without compromising quality, safety, or design integrity.

Your expertise will be vital in developing detailed bills of quantities (BoQ), comprehensive cost breakdowns, and accurate cash flow projections that inform strategic decision-making. You will work collaboratively with project managers, architects, engineers, and clients, offering expert advice on contractual matters, procurement strategies, and robust cost control measures throughout project execution. Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of current market rates, construction methodologies, regulatory frameworks, and sustainability practices will be crucial for success in this role, allowing you to advise on the most efficient and effective solutions. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for building projects from concept to completion.
  • Analyze architectural drawings, specifications, and tender documents to quantify materials, labor, and plant requirements.
  • Obtain and review quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, negotiating best prices and terms.
  • Develop comprehensive Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and cost breakdowns.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments and develop value engineering proposals to optimize project costs.
  • Advise on procurement strategies, contractual agreements, and cost control measures.
  • Monitor and control project costs, preparing regular cost reports, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, architects, engineers, and clients to ensure project viability and success.
  • Keep abreast of market rates, construction trends, new methodologies, and relevant legislative changes.
  • Maintain and update a robust database of cost information and supplier details.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Estimator in building construction.
  • Proficiency in construction estimation software (e.g., Candy, CCS, Buildsoft, CostX).
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and local legal regulations in Kenya.
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex architectural and engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Exceptional negotiation and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • High level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially advanced Excel functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Professional membership with a relevant body (e.g., Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya – IQSK, Architectural Association of Kenya – Quantity Surveyors Chapter – AAKQS).
  • Experience with sustainable building practices and green construction costing.
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP, Prince2).
