Job Description

We are actively seeking a passionate, skilled, and dedicated Kitchen Cook to join our vibrant culinary team at Avani Maseru Hotel. This is an immediate start position for an individual who is eager to hit the ground running and make a significant impact in our fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment. As a Kitchen Cook, you will be instrumental in preparing high-quality dishes across various sections of our kitchen, ensuring all meals meet our exacting standards of taste, presentation, and hygiene. You will work closely with our Head Chef, Sous Chefs, and other culinary professionals, contributing your expertise to deliver outstanding dining experiences for our diverse clientele, ranging from hotel guests to event attendees. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook food items according to established recipes, menus, and quality standards for various meal periods and events.
  • Ensure all food preparation and cooking procedures adhere strictly to hygiene, sanitation, and food safety regulations (HACCP standards).
  • Efficiently manage and maintain a specific section of the kitchen (e.g., grill, sauté, pantry, cold section) during service hours.
  • Assist in monitoring inventory levels, receiving and inspecting supplies, and maintaining proper storage and rotation of food products.
  • Contribute to menu development and innovation, suggesting new ideas, techniques, and ingredients to enhance our culinary offerings.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work station and overall kitchen area at all times, including proper equipment cleaning and maintenance.
  • Collaborate effectively with other kitchen staff, stewarding, and front-of-house teams to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • Operate kitchen equipment and tools safely and responsibly, reporting any malfunctions or hazards promptly.
  • Minimize food waste and control portion sizes to optimize costs without compromising quality.
  • Adapt to special dietary requests, guest preferences, and menu changes as needed with professionalism and flexibility.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 1.5 years) as a Cook or Commis Chef in a professional kitchen setting (hotel, restaurant, or catering).
  • Solid understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and culinary procedures.
  • Familiarity with industry best practices and strict adherence to food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced and high-pressure kitchen environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent time management capabilities to meet service deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication and teamwork abilities to foster a cohesive kitchen atmosphere.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a genuine passion for culinary excellence.
  • High attention to detail in food preparation, plating, and presentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Culinary diploma or equivalent certification from a recognized culinary institution.
  • Experience working in a hotel kitchen or a multi-cuisine establishment.
  • Basic knowledge of inventory management, stock rotation, and cost control principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Sesotho in addition to English.
  • First Aid and HACCP certification.
