Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to lead and manage all aspects of occupational health and safety within our bustling industrial estate in Duncans, Trelawny. This is a pivotal role for a professional dedicated to fostering a culture of safety excellence and ensuring strict compliance with local and international H&S regulations.

As our Health & Safety Officer, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs and policies designed to minimize risks, prevent accidents, and promote a healthy work environment for all employees and contractors. You will be instrumental in conducting regular risk assessments, performing site inspections, and identifying potential hazards. A key part of your role will involve leading incident investigations, determining root causes, and implementing corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. You will also be tasked with organizing and delivering engaging safety training sessions, ensuring all staff are aware of best practices, emergency procedures, and their individual responsibilities regarding safety.

This position requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of industrial operations, machinery, and potential sector-specific risks. You will act as the primary point of contact for all H&S-related queries and will be expected to advise management on regulatory changes and improvements needed to maintain a cutting-edge safety framework. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive Health & Safety policies and procedures in alignment with local regulations and international best practices.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments to identify hazards, assess risks, and recommend control measures.
  • Lead and manage all incident/accident investigations, documenting findings, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Organize and deliver H&S training programs for all employees, ensuring awareness of safe work procedures, emergency protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant occupational health and safety legislation and advise management on compliance requirements and potential impacts.
  • Prepare and present regular H&S reports, statistics, and performance indicators to management.
  • Oversee the proper storage and handling of hazardous materials and waste management procedures.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through continuous communication, awareness campaigns, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Ensure all safety equipment is properly maintained, inspected, and readily available.
  • Coordinate with external regulatory bodies during inspections and audits.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican OSH legislation and international H&S standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001).
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to conduct effective training sessions and presentations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent.
  • Experience with safety management systems implementation and auditing.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of specific industrial processes relevant to the Duncans industrial estate (e.g., logistics, light manufacturing).
