Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our growing team in Hurlingham, Nairobi. This pivotal role supports our veterinarians and veterinary technicians in delivering top-tier medical care to a diverse range of animals. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of our clinic, contributing directly to the comfort and recovery of our patients, and providing exceptional service to their owners. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, procedures, and surgeries, including preparing surgical sites and monitoring patients.
  • Perform safe and humane animal handling and restraint techniques for various species.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian, ensuring accurate dosing and record-keeping.
  • Prepare and sterilize surgical instruments, equipment, and examination rooms.
  • Provide compassionate nursing care for hospitalized patients, including feeding, walking, monitoring vital signs, and ensuring comfort.
  • Conduct basic laboratory tests such as urinalysis, fecal examinations, and prepare samples for external analysis.
  • Educate pet owners on proper animal care, nutrition, medication administration, and post-operative instructions.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient medical records, including treatment plans, observations, and communication with clients.
  • Manage inventory of clinic supplies, assist with ordering, and ensure all areas are stocked and organized.
  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance of the clinic, including kennels, examination rooms, and surgical areas, to uphold high standards of hygiene.
  • Assist with front desk duties, including scheduling appointments, handling client inquiries, processing payments, and managing phone calls.
  • Provide emotional support to pet owners during difficult times, demonstrating empathy and professionalism.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in animal handling and restraint techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of veterinary medical terminology and common animal diseases.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with empathy for animals and their owners.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and sometimes emotionally challenging environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills for record-keeping and clinic management software.
  • Physical stamina to lift and restrain animals, stand for long periods, and perform repetitive tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or Diploma in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with veterinary practice management software (e.g., PIMS, ezyVet, VetBlue).
  • Knowledge of local animal welfare regulations and best practices.
  • Fluency in both English and Kiswahili.
