Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily feeding and watering of various livestock, adhering strictly to established nutritional guidelines and feeding schedules.
  • Monitor livestock regularly for any signs of illness, injury, abnormal behavior, or distress, reporting observations promptly and accurately to the farm manager or veterinary staff.
  • Assist with the safe and humane handling, moving, and restraint of animals for routine care procedures, vaccinations, deworming, and medical treatments.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, hygiene, and overall sanitation of animal pens, stalls, shelters, watering points, and pasture areas to prevent disease.
  • Operate and maintain essential farm equipment such as feed mixers, tractors, utility vehicles, and other machinery safely and efficiently (with training provided where necessary).
  • Assist during birthing processes, providing immediate care for newborn animals, including monitoring their health, colostrum intake, and ensuring maternal bonding.
  • Participate actively in pasture rotation management, fence construction and repair, and other general farm maintenance and upkeep tasks.
  • Accurately record daily activities, animal health data, feed consumption, medication administration, and other relevant farm information.
  • Adhere to all farm safety protocols, biosecurity measures, and animal welfare standards as set by Katavi Ranch Company Limited and regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate effectively with all team members, communicating clearly and contributing to a positive, productive, and respectful work environment.

Required Skills

  • Proven practical experience (minimum 1 year) in livestock handling and care, preferably with cattle, goats, or sheep.
  • Ability to identify common animal health issues, symptoms of illness, and behavioral changes indicative of distress.
  • Basic understanding of animal nutrition, feed types, and safe feeding practices.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform demanding farm duties, including lifting, bending, carrying, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to animal well-being.
  • High level of reliability, punctuality, and a strong, consistent work ethic.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately and efficiently, working both independently and effectively as part of a team.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for accurate record-keeping and understanding instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or Diploma in Animal Husbandry, General Agriculture, Veterinary Science, or a closely related field.
  • Prior experience operating farm machinery (e.g., tractors, skid steers, utility vehicles) with a clean safety record.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid for farm animals and emergency response protocols.
  • Familiarity with sustainable farming practices, rotational grazing, and pasture management techniques.
  • Valid driving license (Class B or C for Tanzania) for operating farm vehicles.
