Job Description
Union Cafe is seeking a passionate and dedicated Cook – Restaurant Assistant to join our dynamic kitchen team in Moshi. Key Responsibilities
- Assist head chefs with food preparation tasks, including washing, peeling, chopping vegetables, portioning ingredients, and preparing sauces and marinades.
- Execute basic cooking tasks such as grilling, frying, sautéing, and baking according to established recipes and standards.
- Ensure all dishes are prepared and presented to Union Cafe's quality and aesthetic standards before being served.
- Maintain a clean and organized work station, including regular cleaning of kitchen equipment, utensils, cooking areas, and storage spaces.
- Adhere strictly to all food safety and hygiene regulations, including proper food storage, temperature control, and cross-contamination prevention.
- Monitor inventory levels of ingredients, report shortages to the kitchen manager or head chef, and assist in stock rotation.
- Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries properly, checking for quality and freshness.
- Collaborate effectively with other kitchen staff and front-of-house team members to ensure smooth and timely service.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful, and efficient kitchen environment, assisting colleagues as needed.
- Learn and adapt to new recipes, cooking techniques, and kitchen procedures as introduced by the head chef or management.
Required Skills
- Proven basic cooking skills and practical experience in a kitchen environment (either home or professional setting).
- Ability to accurately follow recipes and instructions with consistency.
- Strong understanding and commitment to food safety and hygiene principles.
- Ability to work efficiently and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong ability to work as part of a team.
- High level of reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods, lift moderate weights (up to 20kg), and perform repetitive tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal culinary training or a diploma/certificate from a recognized culinary institution.
- Previous experience as a Cook Assistant, Kitchen Porter, or similar role in a cafe or restaurant setting.
- Basic knowledge of local Tanzanian cuisine and international cooking styles.
- Flexibility to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, as per cafe needs.
