The Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI) is a parastatal body operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping. Established in 2000, MOI is the national focal point for marine scientific research and development in Mauritius. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior scientists in the planning and execution of marine research projects, both in the laboratory and during fieldwork.
- Conduct laboratory analyses, including sample preparation, chemical analysis, and biological assays, following established protocols.
- Participate in field expeditions (e.g., boat-based surveys, coastal monitoring, diving operations) to collect oceanographic, biological, and geological samples and data.
- Operate and maintain a variety of scientific equipment, sensors, and instruments.
- Perform preliminary data processing, entry, and quality control using specialized software.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of experimental procedures, observations, and results.
- Contribute to the drafting of research reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations in all research activities.
- Assist in literature reviews and preparation of research proposals.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Fisheries Science, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of scientific principles and research methodologies.
- Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques and data handling.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English and French.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Physical fitness and ability to participate in fieldwork, sometimes under challenging conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in marine fieldwork or laboratory settings (e.g., during internships or academic projects).
- Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., R, MATLAB, Python) or GIS applications.
- Basic knowledge of marine sampling equipment and techniques.
- PADI Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.
- Valid driving license.
