Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Port Operator with strong capabilities in Dock & Warehouse Coordination to join a dynamic team in the bustling Streatham, London area. This vital role involves overseeing the efficient and safe movement of goods and vessels within a busy port environment, ensuring smooth operational flow from vessel arrival to cargo dispatch. You will be instrumental in managing the complex logistics of container handling, bulk cargo, and general freight, ensuring all operations adhere to strict safety regulations and company policies.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating loading and unloading procedures, managing warehouse inventory, and collaborating closely with various stakeholders including vessel captains, customs officials, haulage companies, and internal teams. Your day-to-day will involve direct supervision of dock activities, operating various pieces of port equipment, and maintaining meticulous records of cargo movements and storage. Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the loading, unloading, and stowing of various types of cargo from vessels, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and operational efficiency.
  • Manage and maintain accurate inventory records for goods stored in the warehouse, including tracking incoming and outgoing shipments.
  • Operate and maintain a range of port equipment, including forklifts, cranes (where certified), and other heavy machinery, ensuring safe and efficient usage.
  • Coordinate effectively with vessel crews, customs agents, hauliers, and other port service providers to ensure seamless cargo movements and vessel turnaround.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of equipment and operational areas, identifying and rectifying potential hazards.
  • Prepare and submit daily operational reports, including cargo manifests, equipment logs, and incident reports.
  • Implement and enforce all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures within the port and warehouse areas.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and implement timely solutions to minimise disruptions and maintain schedules.
  • Train and mentor junior operators or support staff as required, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of proven experience in port operations, maritime logistics, or a similar heavy industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in operating various port machinery, including forklifts and reach stackers; relevant certifications are highly advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of maritime safety regulations, cargo handling procedures, and warehouse management best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of coordinating with diverse teams and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure, solve problems swiftly, and adapt to changing operational demands.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in varying weather conditions and environments typical of port operations.
  • Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and report generation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational training or certification in port management, logistics, or supply chain operations.
  • Experience with port management systems (e.g., TOS – Terminal Operating Systems).
  • Leadership or supervisory experience in a port or warehouse setting.
  • First Aid and Fire Safety certifications.
