Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute daily feeding and watering of various livestock (e.g., cattle, poultry, goats) according to strict schedules and dietary plans.
  • Monitor animal health closely, identifying and reporting any signs of illness, injury, or unusual behaviour to farm management promptly.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary, and safe living environments for all animals, including regular mucking out, bedding changes, and disinfection.
  • Assist with animal handling, gentle restraint, and movement for routine tasks such as vaccinations, medical treatments, and breeding procedures.
  • Operate and conduct basic maintenance on farm equipment used in livestock care, including feed mixers, pressure washers, and transport vehicles.
  • Accurately record data related to feed consumption, animal weight, health treatments, breeding cycles, and other relevant farm metrics.
  • Ensure proper inventory, storage, and rotation of feed, supplements, medications, and other farm supplies.
  • Strictly adhere to all biosecurity protocols, animal welfare standards, and health and safety regulations.
  • Assist with general farm duties as required, including fence repair, pasture rotation, and minor facility maintenance.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 1 year) in livestock handling and care, preferably with multiple animal types.
  • Exceptional physical stamina and ability to perform demanding farm work in various weather conditions.
  • Strong observational skills and meticulous attention to detail regarding animal behaviour and health.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of animal nutrition, common livestock diseases, and preventative care.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Unwavering commitment to animal welfare and ethical farming practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training or certification in animal husbandry, agriculture, or a related field.
  • Specific experience with livestock prevalent in Mauritius (e.g., dairy cattle, broiler chickens, goats).
  • Knowledge of basic veterinary first aid and emergency response for animals.
  • A valid Mauritian driver's license with experience operating farm vehicles.
  • Ability to operate and perform minor troubleshooting on essential farm machinery.
