Job Description
Career.zycto is seeking a highly dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to lead our safety initiatives within a dynamic industrial estate located in Norman Gardens, Kingston. This professional role is pivotal in upholding the highest standards of occupational health and safety, ensuring full compliance with national regulations (such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act of Jamaica) and international best practices, and fostering a proactive safety culture across multiple operational units. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs tailored to the unique challenges of an industrial environment, which encompasses a diverse range of activities including manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, and maintenance operations.
You will be the primary point of contact for all Health & Safety matters, working closely with site management, departmental heads, employees, and external stakeholders (e.g., regulatory bodies, contractors, emergency services) to meticulously identify, assess, and mitigate risks, thereby preventing incidents and promoting a secure working environment. This involves conducting regular site inspections, hazard analyses, and risk assessments to pinpoint potential dangers and implement effective control measures. A significant part of this role will also involve designing and delivering engaging safety training programs for all levels of staff, ensuring a thorough understanding of safety policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain robust Health & Safety policies and procedures in line with national regulations (e.g., Jamaica's OSH Act) and international best practices.
- Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and comprehensive risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify hazards and ensure continuous compliance.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, near-misses, and occupational illnesses, determining root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Design and deliver engaging and comprehensive safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors to ensure awareness and adherence to H&S protocols.
- Manage and coordinate emergency response plans, including fire safety, first aid, disaster preparedness, and evacuation procedures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all H&S activities, incidents, training, and compliance documentation, preparing reports as required.
- Advise site management on H&S matters, promoting a proactive safety culture and recommending initiatives for continuous improvement.
- Liaise effectively with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and contractors on all Health & Safety issues and requirements.
- Oversee the proper selection, use, maintenance, and availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across all operations.
- Conduct environmental impact assessments and ensure adherence to environmental regulations where applicable within the industrial estate.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in Health & Safety management, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, logistics, or similar large-scale operational environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations and standards.
- Proven expertise in conducting thorough risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a detail-oriented approach.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Certification in NEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely, or an equivalent recognized Health & Safety qualification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a relevant technical discipline.
- Additional certifications such as Lead Auditor (ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
- Experience with integrated management systems (IMS).
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
- Proficiency in Spanish or other relevant languages.
