Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the R&D department, setting strategic priorities and objectives aligned with company vision.
- Oversee the full product development lifecycle from concept generation to commercial launch, ensuring technical excellence and market viability.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive R&D roadmap, incorporating market trends, customer needs, and technological advancements in agricultural technology and manufacturing.
- Foster a culture of innovation, scientific inquiry, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the R&D team.
- Manage R&D budgets, allocate resources effectively, and oversee project timelines to ensure on-time and within-budget delivery.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of scientists, engineers, and technicians, promoting their professional growth.
- Identify, evaluate, and integrate new technologies, scientific breakthroughs, and research methodologies into product development processes.
- Ensure all R&D activities comply with relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, safety protocols, and quality assurance guidelines.
- Collaborate extensively with cross-functional teams including production, marketing, sales, and quality assurance to ensure seamless product integration and market success.
- Present R&D progress, strategic insights, challenges, and opportunities to executive leadership and key stakeholders regularly.
Required Skills
- Proven leadership experience in R&D management (10+ years in a senior role).
- Strong technical background in agricultural technology, advanced manufacturing, or a related engineering/scientific field.
- Expertise in product lifecycle management, innovation methodologies, and stage-gate processes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, articulate, and execute complex R&D strategies.
- Proficiency in budget management, resource allocation, and project portfolio management.
- Excellent analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Solid understanding of intellectual property management and patenting processes.
- Ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team of technical professionals.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Biotechnology, Material Science, or a closely related scientific field.
- Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g., automation, IoT integration) and smart agriculture solutions.
- Track record of successful patent applications, scientific publications, or commercialized innovative products.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements relevant to agricultural products in the SADC region.
- Experience in a rapidly scaling organization or a startup environment.
- Certification in Project Management (e.g., PMP).
