As a Guidance Counselor focused on student welfare, you will work directly with students from diverse backgrounds, providing confidential counseling, intervention, and support for a wide range of issues, including academic stress, peer relationships, family challenges, mental health concerns, and future planning. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students regarding academic, personal, social, and career concerns.
- Develop and implement comprehensive guidance programs and workshops on topics such as stress management, peer relations, bullying prevention, and career exploration.
- Act as a primary resource for students experiencing personal crises, emotional distress, or academic difficulties, offering intervention and support.
- Collaborate with teachers, school administration, and parents/guardians to address student needs and ensure a consistent support system.
- Identify and refer students to appropriate external support services and agencies when necessary, maintaining confidentiality.
- Assist students in developing effective study habits, time management skills, and strategies for academic success.
- Facilitate career guidance, including college/university applications, vocational training options, and job readiness skills.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress, adhering to ethical and professional standards.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development activities.
- Advocate for student well-being and contribute to a positive, inclusive, and safe school environment.
Required Skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Proven ability to provide effective individual and group counseling.
- Strong understanding of child and adolescent development, mental health, and learning theories.
- Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
- Empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders including students, parents, and staff.
- Proficiency in record-keeping and data management.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Certification or licensure as a School Counselor in Mauritius or an equivalent international qualification.
- At least 2 years of experience as a Guidance Counselor or similar role within an educational setting.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with local educational system and social service resources in Mauritius.
- Proficiency in French and/or Creole in addition to English.
