Job Description
AfriSam Lesotho is urgently seeking a skilled and dedicated Mechanic to join our dynamic team in Maputsoe, Leribe. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on heavy vehicles, plant machinery, and equipment according to strict schedules and manufacturer specifications to ensure peak performance and longevity.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults accurately and efficiently using advanced diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and systematic troubleshooting techniques.
- Execute timely and effective repairs, including but not limited to, engine overhauls, transmission work, brake system repairs, suspension maintenance, and hydraulic component replacements.
- Conduct thorough inspections to identify potential issues and proactively address them before they lead to major breakdowns, contributing to predictive maintenance strategies.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used, hours expended, and fault diagnosis, utilizing company-specific systems.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, as well as industry safety standards, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues.
- Collaborate effectively with the operations team to schedule maintenance activities efficiently, minimizing impact on production targets and operational timelines.
- Assist in the ordering, receiving, and managing of spare parts inventory, ensuring critical components are readily available and stock levels are optimized.
- Provide technical support, guidance, and mentorship to junior mechanics or equipment operators as needed, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
- Undertake emergency breakdown repairs both on-site and in the field, often under pressure, to restore equipment functionality swiftly and safely.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) as a heavy-duty Mechanic, preferably in a mining, construction, or logistics environment involving large vehicle fleets and industrial machinery.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities for complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems found in heavy equipment.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins from various equipment manufacturers.
- Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive repairs and maintenance on a wide variety of heavy equipment, including excavators, loaders, articulated dump trucks, and industrial generators.
- Valid driver's license with relevant heavy vehicle endorsements (e.g., Code 10/EC) and a clean driving record.
- Excellent understanding of workplace safety regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and best practices for working with heavy machinery.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively as part of a dedicated team in a demanding industrial setting.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective reporting, record-keeping, and interaction with team members.
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform demanding tasks, often in varying weather conditions and environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Trade Test Certificate (e.g., Diesel Mechanic, Auto Electrician, Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic) or an equivalent recognized vocational qualification.
- Experience with specific brands of heavy machinery such as Caterpillar, Volvo, Komatsu, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, or similar.
- Knowledge of computer-aided diagnostic tools and software systems for modern heavy equipment.
- First Aid certification and/or basic fire fighting training.
- Experience with welding and fabrication techniques for minor repairs and modifications.
