Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Agricultural Officer specializing in inspection and advice to join a dynamic team in Plaine Verte, Port Louis. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive field inspections of farms, crops, and livestock operations to assess compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Provide expert, evidence-based advice and recommendations to farmers on best agricultural practices, crop rotation, pest and disease management, and soil health.
  • Monitor adherence to national agricultural regulations, food safety standards, and environmental protection guidelines.
  • Identify and diagnose issues such as crop diseases, pest infestations, nutrient deficiencies, and livestock health problems, offering practical solutions.
  • Develop and deliver engaging training sessions, workshops, and educational materials for farmers and agricultural workers.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret agricultural data to track trends, evaluate program effectiveness, and inform policy recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate inspection reports, technical briefs, and advisory documents.
  • Collaborate effectively with government agencies, research institutions, farmer associations, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Promote and support the adoption of sustainable agricultural techniques, organic farming methods, and climate-resilient practices.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of agricultural extension programs.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, Animal Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in agricultural inspection, advisory services, or extension work.
  • Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of agricultural science, crop production, livestock management, and soil science.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities to diagnose issues and formulate effective solutions.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and report writing, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in field environments and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Valid Mauritian driver's license and willingness to travel extensively for field visits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with specific Mauritian agricultural sectors (e.g., sugarcane, tea, vegetables, fruits, aquaculture).
  • In-depth knowledge of local agricultural policies, frameworks, and supply chain dynamics.
  • Certifications in specialized areas such as integrated pest management (IPM), organic farming, or soil analysis.
  • Fluency in Creole and French in addition to English.
