Are you an experienced and highly skilled Boat Captain with a passion for the open water and a deep understanding of fishing operations? Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and professional Boat Captain to lead our fishing expeditions from Kasarani, Nairobi. This pivotal role involves overseeing all aspects of our fishing vessel’s operations, from navigation and crew management to ensuring compliance with all maritime and fishing regulations. As our Boat Captain, you will be instrumental in planning and executing successful fishing trips, maximizing catch efficiency while strictly adhering to sustainable fishing practices and maintaining the highest standards of safety for your crew and vessel. Key Responsibilities
- Command and navigate the fishing vessel safely and efficiently during all fishing operations.
- Plan and execute fishing expeditions, including route planning, identifying fishing grounds, and managing logistics.
- Manage and supervise the deck crew, assigning tasks, providing training, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Oversee the deployment, retrieval, and maintenance of fishing gear and equipment.
- Ensure strict compliance with all local, national, and international maritime laws, fishing regulations, and environmental standards.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports related to vessel movements, fishing activities, catch data, and safety incidents.
- Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance on the vessel and its equipment to ensure seaworthiness and operational readiness.
- Implement and enforce comprehensive safety procedures and emergency protocols for all crew members.
- Monitor weather conditions, sea state, and other environmental factors to make informed operational decisions.
- Manage the handling, storage, and preservation of the catch to maintain quality and minimize spoilage.
- Communicate effectively with shore-based management regarding operational updates, catch reports, and any challenges encountered.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in marine navigation, including chart reading, GPS, radar, and other electronic navigation aids.
- Strong leadership and crew management abilities, with a focus on teamwork and safety.
- In-depth knowledge of various commercial fishing techniques and equipment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in vessel maintenance and troubleshooting common mechanical issues at sea.
- Ability to make quick, informed decisions under pressure.
- Valid medical certificate for sea service.
- Certified in Basic Safety Training (BST) as per STCW standards.
- Proficiency in English and Swahili.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master 200 GT or equivalent Certificate of Competency (CoC).
- Experience with specific fishing methods relevant to Kenyan waters (e.g., longline, purse seine, trawling).
- Familiarity with local marine ecosystems and sustainable fishing practices in the Indian Ocean.
- Additional certifications in advanced first aid, marine fire fighting, or maritime security.
- Experience with satellite communication systems and modern fish finding technology.
- A clean record of safe vessel operation and regulatory compliance.
