Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive occupational health and safety programs and policies.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
  • Ensure strict compliance with local (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA Jamaica) and relevant international H&S legislation and standards.
  • Design and deliver engaging safety training sessions for employees, contractors, and new hires.
  • Manage emergency response plans, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
  • Oversee the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, inspections, training, and compliance activities.
  • Advise management on health and safety best practices, regulatory changes, and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through active communication, visible leadership, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments and recommend improvements to workstation design and operational processes.
  • Collaborate with engineering and maintenance teams on safety aspects of new equipment installation and modifications.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations in Jamaica (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA principles).
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent incident investigation and root cause analysis skills.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering safety training programs.
  • Familiarity with environmental health and safety (EHS) management systems.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional certification (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH).
  • Experience with ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of specific safety requirements for heavy machinery or industrial equipment.
  • Experience in developing and managing contractor safety programs.
