Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the library's collection, including acquisition, cataloging, and shelving of books, periodicals, and multimedia materials.
- Assist patrons with research, reference inquiries, and the use of library resources and technology.
- Develop and implement engaging library programs and events for all age groups, including literacy initiatives, workshops, and cultural activities.
- Promote digital literacy by assisting patrons with computer use, internet access, and navigating online databases.
- Maintain accurate records of library usage, circulation statistics, and program attendance.
- Ensure the library environment is welcoming, tidy, and conducive to learning and community interaction.
- Collaborate with local schools, community organizations, and other Council departments to enhance library services and outreach.
- Stay updated on current trends and best practices in library science and information management.
- Oversee the proper functioning and maintenance of library equipment and facilities.
- Prepare regular reports on library activities, challenges, and recommendations for improvement to the District Council.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Library Science, Information Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a public library or similar information service environment.
- Proficiency in library management systems and database navigation.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for collection management.
- Basic computer literacy and ability to assist patrons with common software applications.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Fluency in English and Mauritian Creole (both written and spoken).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with community outreach and program development.
- Knowledge of French (written and spoken) is a significant advantage.
- Familiarity with digital archiving and preservation techniques.
- Experience in utilizing social media and digital platforms for library promotion.
