Job Description

This role offers an incredible opportunity for a dedicated Sailor to join our maritime operations team based in Gloucester, England. As a key member of our crew, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient navigation of our vessels and providing essential support to all onboard activities. We are seeking an individual with a strong foundation in seamanship, a proactive attitude, and an unwavering commitment to safety and operational excellence. You will contribute directly to the smooth running of daily operations, assist with vessel maintenance, and uphold the highest standards of maritime practice. This position is ideal for someone passionate about the marine environment, eager to expand their navigational expertise, and thrives in a collaborative team setting. You will be instrumental in executing voyage plans, managing deck operations, and contributing to a positive and productive atmosphere for both crew and any passengers or cargo.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Master/Skipper with navigation, including chart work, passage planning, and watchkeeping duties.
  • Perform deck duties such as mooring, anchoring, line handling, and general vessel operations.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and upkeep of the vessel, including painting, cleaning, and equipment checks.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, regulations (e.g., MARPOL, SOLAS where applicable), and company procedures.
  • Participate in safety drills, emergency response, and crew training sessions.
  • Provide assistance to other crew members as required, fostering a cohesive and efficient team.
  • Monitor weather conditions and vessel status, reporting any concerns promptly.
  • Operate and maintain onboard equipment, including winches, pumps, and communication systems.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of supplies, equipment, or cargo as directed.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records as per operational requirements and company policy.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in maritime operations or a similar sailing role.
  • Proficiency in basic seamanship and navigational principles.
  • Strong understanding of maritime safety procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with sailing and vessel maintenance.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively under pressure.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for vessel upkeep and minor repairs.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Preferred Qualifications

  • RYA Day Skipper or Yachtmaster certification (or equivalent national certification).
  • STCW Basic Safety Training certification.
  • First Aid at Sea qualification.
  • Experience with specific vessel types operating in coastal or estuarial waters (e.g., Severn Estuary).
  • Marine VHF Radio Operator's Certificate.
