Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our team, focusing on ensuring the highest standards of occupational health and safety within a dynamic industrial estate environment in Black River, St. Elizabeth. This professional role is critical to maintaining a secure, compliant, and productive workplace for all personnel and stakeholders operating within the estate.

As our Health & Safety Officer, you will be the cornerstone of our safety culture, responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive health and safety programs. You will play a pivotal role in identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, and enforcing preventative measures in line with local regulations and international best practices. This position requires a proactive individual with a deep understanding of industrial safety protocols, strong leadership capabilities, and an unwavering commitment to employee well-being. You will conduct regular site inspections, lead safety training initiatives, investigate incidents, and maintain meticulous records to demonstrate compliance and drive continuous improvement. Your expertise will be instrumental in fostering a proactive safety mindset among all staff and contractors, ensuring that all operations adhere strictly to safety policies and procedures. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and review Health and Safety (H&S) policies, procedures, and safe work methods in alignment with national legislation and international standards.
  • Conduct regular H&S audits, inspections, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
  • Organize and conduct mandatory H&S training sessions for all employees and contractors, including induction, emergency preparedness, and specific hazard awareness.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant H&S legislation, codes of practice, and industry best practices to ensure continuous compliance.
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive H&S reports, including incident statistics, audit findings, and performance metrics to management.
  • Manage the storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety critical equipment.
  • Liaise with external regulatory bodies, emergency services, and other stakeholders on all H&S matters.
  • Champion a proactive safety culture through continuous communication, awareness campaigns, and employee engagement initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislation and relevant international standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Strong ability to conduct risk assessments, incident investigations, and implement corrective actions.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver engaging safety training programs.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent professional H&S qualification.
  • Experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Membership in a recognized professional safety organization.
