Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Sous Chef to join a dynamic culinary team in Allerton, Liverpool. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Chef in menu planning, development, and execution, ensuring innovation and consistency across all dishes.
  • Oversee daily kitchen operations, including precise food preparation, expert cooking, and immaculate plating, maintaining exceptional quality standards.
  • Manage and mentor junior kitchen staff, providing comprehensive training, constructive guidance, and objective performance feedback to foster a skilled team.
  • Monitor inventory levels meticulously, place timely orders with suppliers, and manage stock rotation efficiently to minimise waste and control food costs.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all food safety, hygiene, and health and safety regulations (including HACCP protocols) at all times.
  • Deputise for the Head Chef in their absence, confidently managing the entire kitchen and leading the team to maintain operational excellence.
  • Contribute actively to a positive and collaborative kitchen culture, fostering strong teamwork and encouraging professional development among staff.
  • Conduct regular and thorough quality checks on all incoming ingredients and finished products to uphold the highest culinary standards.
  • Assist with staff scheduling, employee relations, and other essential administrative tasks as required to ensure smooth kitchen management.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Sous Chef or highly skilled Chef de Partie in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment.
  • Demonstrable expertise in a wide range of cooking techniques, advanced knife skills, and sophisticated food presentation.
  • Strong leadership and effective team management abilities, with a track record of motivating and developing kitchen staff.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, capable of handling multiple priorities and high-pressure situations with composure.
  • In-depth knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen health and safety regulations (e.g., HACCP compliance).
  • A creative flair for menu development, an innovative approach to cuisine, and a genuine passion for high-quality, seasonal ingredients.
  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills for interacting with team members, suppliers, and management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Professional Cookery or an equivalent recognised culinary qualification.
  • Experience with diverse cuisine styles and a keen willingness to explore new culinary trends and techniques.
  • Current Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2 or 3 (e.g., CIEH or Highfield).
  • Knowledge of local suppliers and an understanding of seasonal produce available in the Liverpool region.
  • Demonstrable experience with cost control, budgeting, and waste management in a professional kitchen setting.
