Job Description

This is a critical, professional role for an experienced Health & Safety Officer to lead and manage all aspects of occupational health and safety within our bustling industrial estate in Tower Isle, Ocho Rios. As the primary custodian of our safety culture, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and enforcing robust safety programs that comply with local regulations and international best practices. Our industrial environment presents unique challenges and opportunities, requiring a proactive, detail-oriented professional capable of identifying risks, mitigating hazards, and fostering a deep-seated commitment to safety among all employees and contractors.

You will be responsible for conducting regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety protocols. A significant part of this role involves developing and delivering comprehensive safety training programs for various departments, ensuring all personnel are adequately equipped with the knowledge and skills to perform their duties safely. You will investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, meticulously documenting findings, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective and preventive actions to avoid recurrence. Furthermore, you will be the point person for all regulatory inspections, ensuring our facilities and practices meet or exceed national health and safety standards.

Beyond compliance, we are looking for a leader who can inspire change and champion a proactive safety mindset. This includes promoting occupational health, managing environmental aspects relevant to the industrial setting, and continuously seeking opportunities for improvement in safety performance. You will collaborate closely with operational managers, engineers, and human resources to integrate safety seamlessly into all business processes. Your expertise will be vital in advising management on H&S matters, developing emergency response plans, and ensuring the availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS policies, procedures, and programs in alignment with national and international standards.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and site inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Lead incident investigations, including root cause analysis, documentation, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Design and deliver engaging health and safety training programs for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Ensure compliance with all local and national occupational health and safety regulations, including those specific to industrial operations.
  • Manage emergency preparedness and response plans, conducting drills and ensuring teams are adequately trained.
  • Advise management on health and safety performance, regulatory changes, and best practice implementation.
  • Oversee the selection, maintenance, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns, communication, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and compliance activities.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in occupational health and safety management within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Jamaican occupational health and safety legislation and standards.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough incident investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering safety training programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with ISO 45001 or other integrated management systems.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience in environmental management practices relevant to industrial operations.
  • Professional membership in a recognized H&S body.
