Career.zycto is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our client’s dynamic team, overseeing operations within a bustling industrial estate in Coral Gardens, Montego Bay. This professional role is critical to maintaining a secure, healthy, and compliant working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors. You will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and enforcing robust health and safety policies and procedures, ensuring strict adherence to both local Jamaican regulations and international best practices, thereby safeguarding the well-being of all personnel.
As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be on the front lines, proactively identifying potential hazards, assessing risks across diverse operational areas, and implementing effective control measures to prevent accidents and occupational diseases. Your day-to-day will involve conducting regular, thorough site inspections, leading comprehensive safety audits, and meticulously investigating incidents to determine root causes and recommend sustainable corrective actions. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety programs and procedures in alignment with local regulations and industry standards.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the industrial estate to identify potential hazards and recommend preventative measures.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and developing effective corrective and preventative action plans.
- Organize and deliver engaging safety training sessions for employees and contractors on various topics including emergency preparedness, hazard communication, and proper equipment usage.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant Jamaican Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislation and international best practices.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training, incidents, and other relevant documentation.
- Advise management on safety-related issues, providing expert guidance on compliance, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program, ensuring proper selection, availability, and use.
- Lead emergency response planning and drills, ensuring the estate is prepared for various scenarios.
- Foster a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and leadership.
- Prepare and submit periodic reports on health and safety performance to management.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably within an industrial, manufacturing, or estate management environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations and standards.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as NEBOSH IGC, OSHA, or equivalent.
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Ability to conduct safety audits and develop corrective action plans.
- Experience with environmental management systems is a plus.
