As an Architect – Building Design & Planning, you will be instrumental in all phases of the architectural process, from initial conceptualization and feasibility studies through to detailed design, planning applications, and construction oversight. Your expertise will be crucial in developing innovative, functional, and aesthetically pleasing designs that meet client specifications, regulatory requirements, well-being standards, and sustainable best practices. We are looking for an individual who can not only produce outstanding designs but also effectively communicate their vision to clients, stakeholders, and project teams, ensuring a cohesive and successful project delivery.

This role demands a meticulous eye for detail, a comprehensive understanding of UK building regulations (including Building Regulations Part B, K, M, P, and F), and a proven track record in navigating the planning permission landscape. You will be expected to lead projects, mentor junior architectural staff, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams including structural engineers, mechanical & electrical (M&E) consultants, and urban planners. The ideal candidate will be proficient in industry-standard software and possess a strong portfolio showcasing a range of successful projects that demonstrate creative problem-solving and technical proficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of architectural projects from initial concept to successful completion.
  • Prepare comprehensive architectural drawings, specifications, and schedules utilizing CAD and BIM software.
  • Manage and submit planning applications, ensuring full compliance with local and national planning policies and building regulations.
  • Conduct thorough feasibility studies, site analyses, and risk assessments to inform design decisions.
  • Act as the primary liaison with clients, contractors, local authorities, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Oversee construction phases, conducting site visits and ensuring strict adherence to design intent, quality standards, and safety protocols.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior architectural staff, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Stay abreast of the latest industry trends, emerging technologies, and sustainable design principles to integrate them into projects.
  • Efficiently manage project budgets, timelines, and resource allocation to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign).
  • Strong understanding and application of UK building regulations, planning law, and construction processes.
  • Exceptional design acumen, technical drawing abilities, and a keen eye for detail.
  • Proven project management and leadership skills, with experience managing projects from inception to handover.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and client-facing skills.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Robust problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Demonstrable experience in preparing detailed design packages and tender documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ARB registration (Architects Registration Board) is highly desirable.
  • RIBA Chartered Architect status is a significant advantage.
  • Demonstrable experience with sustainable design principles (e.g., BREEAM, Passivhaus, CSH).
  • Master's degree in Architecture or a related advanced architectural qualification.
  • Experience across a diverse portfolio of project sectors (e.g., residential, commercial, public, education).
  • Proficiency in 3D rendering and visualization software (e.g., Lumion, V-Ray, Enscape).
  • Experience with contract administration (e.g., JCT, NEC).
