Job Description

Matekane Group of Companies is actively seeking an experienced Farm Operator to join our growing agricultural team in Ha Nohana, Quthing. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in the daily operations of our modern farm, contributing to efficient crop production, livestock management, and general farm maintenance. Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain a wide range of farm machinery and equipment, including tractors, planters, cultivators, sprayers, and harvesting equipment, ensuring safe and efficient use.
- Perform daily inspections, routine maintenance, and minor repairs on all farm equipment to ensure optimal performance, prevent breakdowns, and extend equipment lifespan.
- Execute field operations such as plowing, planting, spraying, fertilizing, irrigating, and harvesting according to specific schedules, work orders, and agronomic recommendations.
- Monitor crop health diligently, identify common pests and diseases, and apply appropriate treatments under the guidance of farm management and agronomists.
- Assist with livestock management (if applicable to farm setup), including feeding, watering, general care, movement, and maintaining strict animal welfare standards.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all farming activities, including chemical applications, planting dates, yields, fuel consumption, and equipment maintenance logs.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, environmental guidelines, and agricultural compliance standards to ensure a safe and sustainable working environment.
- Participate in general farm upkeep, including fence repair, building maintenance, groundskeeping, and ensuring the farm premises are clean and organized.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with farm management regarding operational issues, equipment status, progress of tasks, and any potential challenges.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) operating and maintaining heavy farm machinery, including modern tractors and implements.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for farm equipment; ability to perform basic field repairs.
- Fundamental knowledge of crop cycles, soil health management, irrigation techniques, and agricultural best practices.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a diverse team in a demanding outdoor environment.
- Excellent physical stamina and ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy objects, bending, stooping, and working extended hours during peak agricultural seasons.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; additional licenses for specialized equipment are a plus.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, environmental stewardship, and adherence to company protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent; a certificate or diploma in Agriculture, Agronomy, or a related technical field is highly desirable.
- Experience with precision agriculture technologies such as GPS guidance systems, variable rate application, and yield monitoring systems.
- Familiarity with local agricultural regulations, indigenous crops, and climate challenges specific to Lesotho.
- Basic animal husbandry skills and experience with different types of farm animals (e.g., cattle, sheep, poultry) if relevant to the farm's operations.
- Ability to speak Sesotho is highly advantageous for effective communication within the local community and team.
