Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Officer to join our dynamic team, focusing on industrial estate operations in Bog Walk, St. Catherine. This professional role is critical in fostering a robust safety culture and ensuring strict adherence to all national and international health and safety regulations within our industrial facilities. As a Health & Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety programs that protect our employees, contractors, and visitors, while also safeguarding company assets and reputation. You will be responsible for conducting thorough risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, and formulating effective mitigation strategies tailored to the unique challenges of an industrial environment. This role demands a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail and a passion for continuous improvement in safety performance. You will lead safety training initiatives, ensuring all personnel are equipped with the knowledge and skills to perform their duties safely. Incident investigation, root cause analysis, and the implementation of corrective actions will be key aspects of your daily responsibilities. Furthermore, you will act as a primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, collaborating closely with operational managers, engineering teams, and external regulatory bodies. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain occupational health and safety programs and policies in line with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits of industrial estate facilities, machinery, and work practices to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
- Perform detailed risk assessments and job safety analyses (JSAs) for all industrial operations and propose effective control measures.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, conducting root cause analyses and recommending preventative and corrective actions.
- Coordinate and deliver comprehensive health and safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Ensure all necessary safety equipment is available, maintained, and used correctly.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and regulatory compliance.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies (e.g., OSH Department) during inspections and ensure all legal obligations are met.
- Monitor and report on key health and safety performance indicators, recommending improvements where necessary.
- Develop and manage emergency response plans and conduct regular drills.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through communication, engagement, and incentive programs.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican OSH legislation and international safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent professional safety qualification.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with environmental management systems.
