Job Description

St. Bernard’s Primary School is seeking a skilled and proactive Caretaker to join our team in Ha Pita, Maseru. This is a crucial role that ensures our school premises are always in excellent condition, providing a clean, safe, and functional space for our students, teachers, and visitors. As our Caretaker, you will be the backbone of our facility management, responsible for a wide range of tasks from general maintenance and repairs to groundskeeping and ensuring the security of the campus. Your efforts will directly contribute to creating an optimal learning atmosphere, where children can focus on their education without distractions related to their surroundings. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine daily checks of the school premises, identifying and addressing maintenance issues promptly.
  • Execute minor repairs across the school, including basic plumbing, electrical fixes, carpentry, and painting.
  • Ensure all areas of the school, including classrooms, corridors, offices, and restrooms, are clean, tidy, and hygienic.
  • Manage waste disposal and recycling systems efficiently, ensuring proper collection and segregation.
  • Maintain school grounds, including gardening, sweeping pathways, and ensuring clear access to all entrances.
  • Monitor security systems, lock and unlock premises according to schedule, and report any suspicious activity.
  • Assist with setting up and dismantling equipment for school events, assemblies, and functions.
  • Oversee the stock of cleaning and maintenance supplies, reporting needs for replenishment.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, ensuring a safe environment for everyone on campus.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance requests and emergencies as required.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a caretaking, facilities management, or similar maintenance role.
  • Demonstrable skills in general building maintenance and minor repairs (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry).
  • Ability to operate and maintain basic cleaning and groundskeeping equipment.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations and practices.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Physical stamina and capability to perform demanding manual tasks, including lifting and carrying.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Basic communication skills to interact effectively with staff and students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Previous experience working in a school or educational institution setting.
  • Knowledge of local suppliers and service providers for maintenance needs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
