Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled, dedicated, and compassionate Paramedic to join our Emergency Medical Service (EMS) team at Kasane Medical Centre. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to provide critical pre-hospital care in one of Botswana’s most dynamic and picturesque locations. As a Paramedic, you will be on the front lines, responding to a diverse range of medical emergencies, from general illnesses and accidents to trauma incidents, both within Kasane and in the surrounding Chobe District. Your expertise will be vital in assessing patient conditions, stabilizing vital signs, administering life-saving treatments, and preparing patients for safe transport to appropriate medical facilities. This role demands exceptional clinical skills, quick decision-making under pressure, and a profound commitment to patient well-being. You will work within a supportive team environment, often collaborating with local authorities, other medical professionals, and safari lodges. The ideal candidate will possess a strong sense of responsibility, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt to varying situations, including those in remote or challenging environments. You will be instrumental in upholding our reputation for delivering timely and effective emergency medical care, contributing significantly to the health and safety of our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly and efficiently to emergency calls, both within Kasane town and surrounding areas.
  • Perform rapid and accurate patient assessments, identify life-threatening conditions, and initiate appropriate interventions.
  • Administer advanced life support (ALS) procedures, including intravenous therapy, medication administration, airway management, and cardiac monitoring.
  • Operate and maintain emergency medical equipment, ensuring readiness and proper functioning at all times.
  • Safely transport patients to medical facilities while continuously monitoring their condition and providing ongoing care.
  • Document all patient interactions, treatments, and observations thoroughly and accurately according to medical protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals, emergency services, and community partners.
  • Maintain strict adherence to clinical protocols, infection control standards, and patient confidentiality.
  • Participate in ongoing training, continuous professional development, and community health initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Degree in Paramedicine or Emergency Medical Care from a recognized institution.
  • Current registration with the relevant medical professional council in Botswana (or eligible for registration).
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience as a Paramedic in an emergency setting.
  • Valid driver's license with professional driving experience, preferably for emergency vehicles.
  • Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in emergency medical procedures, equipment operation, and medication administration.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in remote or rural medical environments.
  • Additional certifications such as Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS).
  • Familiarity with local health systems and community resources in Botswana.
  • Ability to speak local languages (e.g., Setswana) in addition to English.
  • Experience in patient triage and emergency department support.
