Job Description

Recycling Partners of Jamaica (RPJ) is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as an Entry Level Waste Sorting Worker at our facility in Barbican, Kingston. This is a vital hands-on role that forms the backbone of our recycling operations, directly contributing to our mission of a cleaner Jamaica. No prior experience in waste management is required – we are looking for individuals with a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to teamwork.

As a Waste Sorting Worker, you will be on the front lines, meticulously separating various recyclable materials from mixed waste streams. This role demands attention to detail, physical stamina, and an unwavering commitment to safety protocols. You will be responsible for identifying and sorting materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, glass, and metals, ensuring they are prepared for further processing. Your efforts directly impact the efficiency of our recycling process and the quality of materials we recover, helping to reduce landfill waste and promote resource conservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manually sort and separate various recyclable materials (plastics, paper, glass, metals, etc.) from incoming waste streams on a conveyor belt or sorting line.
  • Identify and remove non-recyclable items or contaminants from the material flow.
  • Operate baling equipment or other machinery as needed, after appropriate training, to compact sorted materials.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to all housekeeping standards.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and procedures, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure efficient processing and meet daily operational targets.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to supervisors immediately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail for accurate material identification.
  • Good physical stamina and ability to lift up to 25 kg regularly.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • A positive attitude and a strong commitment to teamwork and safety.
  • Basic communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a general labor or warehouse environment is a plus, but not required.
  • Understanding of basic environmental principles and recycling processes.
