Career.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Fishmonger to join our dedicated team at our Yaya Centre location in Nairobi. As a Fishmonger, you will be the face of our seafood department, responsible for ensuring our customers receive the freshest, highest-quality products, expertly prepared to their specifications.
Your role will involve a wide array of tasks, from the careful receiving and inspection of daily seafood deliveries to the artistic display of our premium selection. You will be expected to masterfully scale, gut, fillet, and portion various types of fish and shellfish with precision and speed, always keeping food safety and hygiene protocols at the forefront of your operations. Beyond preparation, a critical part of your job will be to engage with our valued customers, providing expert advice on seafood selection, recommending cooking methods, and sharing your knowledge on origin and sustainability practices. You will play a pivotal role in creating an inviting and educational shopping experience, building strong relationships with our clientele.

Key Responsibilities
- Greet customers warmly, provide expert advice on seafood selection, cooking methods, and sustainability.
- Perform skilled fish preparation tasks including scaling, gutting, filleting, and portioning various types of fish and shellfish to customer specifications.
- Maintain an attractive, fresh, and well-stocked seafood display, ensuring proper rotation, clear pricing, and appealing presentation.
- Receive, inspect, and store fresh seafood deliveries, verifying quality, quantity, and adhering to strict temperature controls.
- Adhere strictly to all food safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards (HACCP principles) in the display area, prep station, and storage facilities.
- Monitor inventory levels, minimize waste, and contribute to ordering decisions to ensure optimal stock.
- Operate cash register and process customer transactions accurately and efficiently.
- Clean and sanitize all equipment, tools, and work surfaces regularly throughout the day and at closing.
- Assist in special promotions, tastings, or events to drive seafood sales and enhance customer engagement.
- Actively participate in team meetings and contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 1 year) as a fishmonger or in a dedicated seafood retail environment.
- Exceptional knife skills for precise and efficient filleting, skinning, and portioning of various types of fish.
- Strong knowledge of different fish species, shellfish, their origins, seasonality, and optimal preparation methods.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to engage and educate customers.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of quality and hygiene.
- Understanding of food safety regulations and best practices (e.g., HACCP).
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods, lift heavy items (up to 20kg), and work in a refrigerated environment.
- Attention to detail in product presentation and freshness.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in food handling or hygiene (e.g., Food Safety Level 2).
- Experience with inventory management and ordering systems specific to fresh produce.
- Fluency in both English and Swahili to effectively communicate with a diverse customer base.
