Job Description
We are seeking a highly dedicated and experienced Safety Officer to join one of our dynamic construction project teams in Mombasa, Mombasa County. This crucial role involves overseeing and ensuring adherence to the highest safety standards across a fast-paced construction site. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies and procedures on the construction site.
- Conduct daily site inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Prepare and deliver regular safety training sessions, inductions, and toolbox talks to all site personnel, including contractors and visitors.
- Ensure all site activities comply with relevant Kenyan occupational health and safety legislation (e.g., OSHA Act) and project-specific safety plans.
- Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incident reports, training logs, and safety audits.
- Advise project management on safety performance, emerging risks, and necessary safety enhancements.
- Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Coordinate with emergency services and facilitate emergency drills and response plans.
- Promote a positive safety culture through effective communication, leadership, and engagement with all stakeholders.
- Monitor environmental compliance on site, ensuring proper waste management and pollution control measures are in place.
- Conduct regular safety audits and prepare reports for management review.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Safety Officer in the construction industry.
- In-depth knowledge of Kenyan occupational health and safety legislation (OSHA Act) and construction safety standards.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, hazard identification, and incident investigation methodologies.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to lead and influence a safety-conscious culture.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- NEBOSH IGC or equivalent international safety qualification.
- Experience with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems).
- Familiarity with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Experience working on large-scale infrastructure or building projects.
