Job Description
North-West University is seeking a meticulous and highly organised Remote Digital Media Asset Cataloger to join our growing team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the strategic management of our valuable digital content from the comfort of your home office, while remaining connected to the Mahikeng campus’s operational hub. As a Digital Media Asset Cataloger, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient organisation, categorisation, and discoverability of a diverse range of digital assets, including images, videos, audio files, and documents. Your work will directly impact our ability to effectively leverage our content for teaching, research, marketing, and institutional communication.
This role requires an individual with a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of metadata standards, and a passion for information architecture. You will be responsible for applying consistent naming conventions, detailed keyword tagging, and comprehensive descriptions to all new and existing digital assets, ensuring they are easily searchable and retrievable by various internal stakeholders across departments. The successful candidate will work independently, managing their time effectively to meet cataloging deadlines, while collaborating remotely with content creators, IT support, and other team members to maintain the integrity and accessibility of our digital asset management (DAM) system. Key Responsibilities
- Accurately catalog and tag a wide variety of digital media assets (photos, videos, audio, documents) according to established guidelines and best practices.
- Develop and apply consistent metadata schemas, keywords, and taxonomies to enhance asset discoverability.
- Perform quality control checks on all cataloged assets to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to institutional standards.
- Collaborate with content creators and internal stakeholders to understand asset requirements and optimise cataloging strategies.
- Assist in the maintenance and continuous improvement of the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system, identifying opportunities for efficiency.
- Ensure all digital assets comply with copyright, licensing, and privacy regulations.
- Provide support and training to users on how to effectively search, retrieve, and utilise digital assets.
- Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies in digital asset management and metadata standards.
Required Skills
- Proven experience with Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems and content management platforms.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
- In-depth understanding of metadata standards (e.g., IPTC, XMP, Dublin Core).
- Proficiency in applying consistent naming conventions and keyword tagging.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote work environment.
- Familiarity with various digital file formats (image, video, audio, document).
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Information Management, Archival Studies, Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
- Experience working in a higher education institution or a large corporate environment with extensive digital media.
- Familiarity with project management methodologies.
- Knowledge of copyright law and digital rights management.
- Proficiency in using graphic design or video editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) for basic asset review.
