Job Description
Are you a master storyteller with a passion for conservation and community development? Wildlands Conservation Trust is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Remote Grant Writer and Proposal Specialist to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role will be instrumental in securing the vital funding required to sustain and expand our impactful environmental and community projects across South Africa, with a specific focus on opportunities relevant to the KwaZulu-Natal region, where you will be based remotely.
As our Grant Writer, you will be responsible for researching funding opportunities, developing compelling grant proposals, and crafting high-quality reports that articulate the profound impact of our work to potential and existing donors, foundations, and corporate partners. You will work closely with programme managers, scientific teams, and senior leadership to translate complex conservation and development initiatives into persuasive narratives that resonate with diverse audiences. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive research to identify prospective grant opportunities from foundations, government agencies, corporate social investment programs, and other funding bodies aligned with Wildlands' mission.
- Develop and write compelling grant proposals, applications, letters of inquiry, and concept notes, adhering strictly to funder guidelines and deadlines.
- Collaborate with programme managers and project leads to gather necessary information, data, and stories for grant submissions, ensuring accuracy and impact.
- Prepare detailed and timely grant reports for existing funders, demonstrating accountability and progress towards project outcomes.
- Maintain a comprehensive grants calendar and database, tracking application statuses, reporting requirements, and funding cycles.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with funders and stakeholders through clear and consistent communication.
- Assist in developing and refining Wildlands' overall fundraising strategy and communication materials.
- Contribute to the strategic planning and budgeting for project proposals.
- Stay abreast of trends in philanthropy, conservation funding, and best practices in grant writing.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Environmental Science, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Proven track record of securing significant grants (minimum ZAR 5 million cumulative) from diverse funding sources.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information clearly and persuasively.
- Strong research and analytical abilities to identify relevant funding opportunities and gather supporting data.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and work independently in a remote setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with CRM or grant management software.
- Familiarity with the South African philanthropic landscape and non-profit sector.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience working with conservation or environmental organisations.
- Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation frameworks for grant reporting.
- Fluency in additional South African languages.
- Certification in professional grant writing or fundraising.
