(ESL), a leader in environmental consulting in Jamaica, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Environmental Officer to join our dynamic team in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. As an Environmental Officer at ESL, you will play a pivotal role in the planning, execution, and oversight of environmental projects from inception to completion. Your responsibilities will span from conducting comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Audits (EAs) to developing and implementing robust Environmental Management Systems (EMS). You will be instrumental in ensuring that our clients’ projects adhere strictly to local and international environmental regulations, providing expert guidance on mitigation strategies, monitoring protocols, and adaptive management plans. This role demands a proactive individual with a strong understanding of environmental legislation, excellent analytical skills, and the proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently while maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy.
Your day-to-day tasks will include conducting thorough field investigations, collecting and analyzing environmental data using advanced tools and methodologies, preparing detailed technical reports, and presenting findings lucidly to clients, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders. Collaboration is key; you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, engage proactively with clients, interact with government agencies, and consult with local communities and other stakeholders to achieve project objectives and foster environmental excellence. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage environmental projects, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Environmental Audits (EAs), and Environmental Management Plans (EMPs).
- Conduct field investigations, site assessments, and environmental monitoring programs.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret environmental data, utilizing appropriate scientific methods and software.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, proposals, and presentations for clients and regulatory agencies.
- Ensure projects comply with Jamaican environmental laws, regulations (e.g., NRCA Act, NEPA permits), and international standards.
- Provide expert environmental advice and recommendations to clients on sustainable practices, risk management, and mitigation strategies.
- Liaise effectively with government agencies, stakeholders, and community groups.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
- Stay abreast of emerging environmental trends, technologies, and regulatory changes.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to team knowledge sharing and capacity building.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in environmental consulting or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting EIAs, EAs, and EMPs.
- Strong understanding of Jamaican environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
- Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and report writing.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for field work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant environmental discipline.
- Professional certification (e.g., Certified Environmental Professional).
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for mapping and spatial analysis.
- Project management certification (e.g., PMP).
- Familiarity with international environmental standards (e.g., IFC Performance Standards, World Bank EHS Guidelines).
