Key Responsibilities
- Receive, label, and log patient specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) accurately and efficiently upon arrival.
- Prepare specimens for testing, which may include centrifugation, aliquoting, and distribution to appropriate testing stations.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments by performing routine cleaning and calibration checks under supervision.
- Ensure strict adherence to all laboratory safety protocols, including the proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Manage and organize laboratory supplies, inventory, and assist with ordering new stock.
- Perform basic clerical tasks such as data entry, filing, and answering departmental calls.
- Assist medical technologists with general laboratory duties as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sterile work environment according to established guidelines.
- Adhere to all quality control procedures and participate in quality assurance activities.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth workflow.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent (CXC/GCE O'Levels, including Science subjects, preferred).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- A keen interest in laboratory science and healthcare.
- Ability to handle sensitive patient information with confidentiality and professionalism.
- Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift light laboratory equipment/supplies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed a science-related course or subject at the CAPE/A'Level standard.
- Previous volunteer or observational experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
