Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of animal habitats, ensuring hygienic and stimulating environments.
- Prepare and provide appropriate diets for various animal species, adhering strictly to nutritional guidelines and feeding schedules.
- Monitor animal health and behaviour closely, reporting any changes, concerns, or abnormalities to senior keepers or veterinary staff.
- Assist in the development and implementation of animal enrichment programs to promote natural behaviours and mental stimulation.
- Participate in public educational programs, guided tours, and animal presentations, communicating conservation messages clearly and engagingly.
- Maintain detailed records of animal observations, feeding, medical treatments, and enrichment activities.
- Support habitat landscaping and general upkeep to ensure safety and aesthetic appeal for both animals and visitors.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and emergency procedures to ensure the well-being of animals, staff, and the public.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, volunteers, and other departments to ensure smooth operations.
- Assist with minor repairs and maintenance of exhibits and animal care equipment as needed.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated passion for animal welfare and conservation.
- Ability to follow strict instructions and protocols meticulously.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
- Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or paid experience working with animals (e.g., shelters, farms, pet care).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Enrollment in or completion of a zoology, biology, animal science, environmental science, or related field program.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Basic knowledge of animal behaviour and natural history.
