Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all daily port operations, including vessel scheduling, berthing, cargo loading/unloading, and storage.
- Develop, implement, and monitor operational procedures to maximize efficiency, productivity, and safety.
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of operational staff, including stevedores, crane operators, and administrative personnel.
- Ensure strict compliance with all local, national, and international maritime regulations, safety protocols, and environmental standards.
- Coordinate with shipping agents, customs, port authorities, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth vessel turnaround and cargo movement.
- Manage port equipment utilization and maintenance schedules to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime.
- Develop and manage operational budgets, track expenditures, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Implement and utilize port management software and technology to improve operational planning and reporting.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans for operational disruptions or emergencies.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on operational performance, KPIs, safety incidents, and productivity metrics.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in port operations management or a closely related maritime field.
- Demonstrated leadership ability with experience managing large operational teams.
- In-depth knowledge of port logistics, vessel operations, cargo handling, and warehousing.
- Strong understanding of national and international maritime regulations (e.g., ISPS Code, IMO conventions).
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in port management software and standard office applications (MS Office Suite).
- Proven ability to make critical decisions under pressure and solve complex operational problems.
- Valid driver's license and ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Maritime Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Certification in Port Management or a related professional maritime qualification.
- Experience with Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies.
- Familiarity with the specific geographic and regulatory landscape of Nova Scotia ports.
