Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Volcanologist to join our team, working from our Trinity Bellwoods, Toronto office. This is a unique opportunity for an Earth scientist with a profound understanding of volcanic processes, hazards, and mitigation strategies. While our primary base is in Toronto, this role will involve a blend of advanced research, data analysis, modeling, and potential (though not immediate or frequent) field study preparation, collaborating with global partners on critical volcanic phenomena. You will be instrumental in analyzing complex geological data, interpreting seismic and ground deformation signals, and contributing to predictive models for volcanic activity. Your work will directly support projects aimed at understanding the Earth’s dynamic crust and its implications for both natural processes and human infrastructure. This role offers the chance to engage with cutting-edge technology, contribute to significant scientific publications, and participate in interdisciplinary discussions that push the boundaries of geoscience. We are looking for an individual who is not only a technical expert but also a proactive problem-solver, capable of working independently and as part of a collaborative research network. If you are passionate about deciphering the secrets beneath the Earth’s surface and applying your knowledge to real-world challenges, we encourage you to explore this exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact within a forward-thinking organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis of volcanic systems, including petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, and structural geology.
  • Develop and refine numerical models for magma transport, eruption dynamics, and hazard assessment.
  • Interpret satellite imagery, seismic data, ground deformation measurements (GPS, InSAR), and gas emissions to monitor volcanic activity.
  • Prepare comprehensive scientific reports, presentations, and publications for peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Collaborate with international research teams and governmental agencies on joint projects and data sharing initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of risk assessment strategies and early warning systems for volcanic hazards.
  • Maintain and utilize specialized laboratory equipment for sample analysis (e.g., electron microprobe, XRF, mass spectrometry).
  • Participate in grant writing and fundraising efforts to secure funding for research projects.
  • Mentor junior scientists and students, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Volcanology, Geology, Geophysics, or a closely related Earth Science field.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-doctoral or relevant professional experience in volcanological research.
  • Demonstrable expertise in petrology and geochemistry of volcanic rocks.
  • Proficiency in geological mapping and structural analysis techniques.
  • Strong command of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial data analysis.
  • Experience with geophysical monitoring techniques (e.g., seismology, geodesy) and associated data processing.
  • Advanced statistical analysis skills and proficiency in programming languages like Python or R.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of scientific publications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with numerical modeling of volcanic processes (e.g., magma ascent, plume dispersion).
  • Familiarity with remote sensing techniques for volcanic hazard assessment.
  • Prior experience in international collaborative research projects.
  • Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Fluency in additional languages relevant to key volcanic regions (e.g., Spanish, Indonesian, Japanese).

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Generous paid time off and statutory holidays.
  • Professional development opportunities, including conference attendance and specialized training.
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and technologies.
  • A vibrant and inclusive work culture in the heart of Toronto.
