Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a passionate and highly skilled Oceanographer to join our dedicated team in Beechwood, Waterloo. This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual eager to contribute to critical marine research and environmental stewardship. As an Oceanographer, you will play a pivotal role in designing and executing studies related to oceanographic processes, marine ecosystems, and the impacts of climate change and human activities on aquatic environments. Your work will directly inform policy recommendations, conservation strategies, and sustainable resource management initiatives.

Our ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography. You will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting complex oceanographic data, utilizing advanced numerical models, remote sensing technologies, and field instrumentation. This role involves both rigorous analytical work in a lab setting and occasional fieldwork, potentially requiring travel to coastal regions or research vessels. You will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and policy experts, translating complex scientific findings into clear, actionable insights for diverse stakeholders. We are looking for someone who is not only technically proficient but also an innovative problem-solver, capable of developing novel research methodologies and contributing to scientific publications. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement oceanographic research projects, including sampling strategies, data collection protocols, and experimental setups.
  • Conduct fieldwork, potentially involving deployment and retrieval of oceanographic instruments, water sampling, and marine organism collection.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret large datasets using statistical software, GIS, and specialized oceanographic modeling tools.
  • Develop and apply numerical models to simulate ocean processes, predict environmental changes, and assess various scenarios.
  • Prepare comprehensive scientific reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to integrate oceanographic data with other environmental, ecological, and socio-economic information.
  • Provide expert advice and technical support to government agencies, industry partners, and conservation organizations.
  • Stay abreast of the latest scientific advancements, technologies, and methodologies in oceanography and related fields.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and funding applications to secure resources for future research initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and environmental regulations during field operations and laboratory work.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Oceanography, Marine Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience with oceanographic data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis software (e.g., R, Python with scientific libraries) and GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Strong understanding of physical, chemical, biological, and/or geological oceanographic principles.
  • Experience with oceanographic modeling (e.g., ROMS, FVCOM, Delft3D) or remote sensing techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific information to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral research experience in oceanography or marine science.
  • Experience with specific oceanographic instrumentation (e.g., CTDs, ADCPs, gliders, buoys).
  • Familiarity with big data management and cloud computing platforms for environmental datasets.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant scientific journals.
  • Experience in grant writing and project management.
  • Knowledge of Canadian marine ecosystems and environmental regulations.
