Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the movement of aircraft within controlled airspace, preventing collisions and ensuring safe and efficient flow.
  • Issue takeoff and landing instructions, clear aircraft for taxiing, and provide critical flight information to pilots.
  • Monitor and interpret radar displays, flight progress strips, and other data to track aircraft positions.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with pilots and other air traffic control units.
  • Manage emergency situations, providing prompt and accurate assistance to aircraft in distress.
  • Coordinate with adjacent air traffic control sectors and airport ground operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of aircraft movements and operational incidents.
  • Adhere strictly to all national and international air traffic control regulations and procedures.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to maintain certifications and enhance skills.

Required Skills

  • Valid Air Traffic Control license/certification (e.g., NAV CANADA ATC license or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to make rapid, accurate decisions under pressure.
  • Exceptional spatial awareness and visualization skills.
  • Superior verbal communication skills, especially in high-stress environments.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Proficiency with air traffic control systems and technology.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused during emergencies.
  • Fluency in English (ICAO Level 4 or higher).
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a busy terminal or area control center.
  • Familiarity with specific Vancouver airspace and operational procedures.
  • Additional language proficiency.
  • Background in aviation or a related field.
  • Post-secondary education in aviation, mathematics, or a technical discipline.
