Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Librarian to join our dedicated team at the National Library of Mauritius. This pivotal role involves the comprehensive management and strategic development of our diverse collections, with a primary focus on both traditional books and a broad spectrum of information resources. As a Librarian, you will be instrumental in ensuring the accessibility, organization, and preservation of our invaluable assets, contributing directly to the intellectual growth and cultural heritage of Mauritius. Key Responsibilities
- Manage the acquisition, cataloging, classification, and organization of print and digital resources, including books, periodicals, and multimedia materials, adhering to international library standards (e.g., AACR2, RDA, DDC, LC).
- Provide comprehensive reference and research assistance to patrons, guiding them in locating and utilizing a wide range of information sources.
- Develop and maintain the library's collection, identifying gaps, recommending new acquisitions, and overseeing weeding processes.
- Assist in the preservation and conservation of valuable library materials, including rare books and archival documents.
- Support the digitization of historical and contemporary collections, ensuring their long-term accessibility.
- Organize and conduct workshops, training sessions, and community outreach programs to promote literacy, information literacy, and the effective use of library resources.
- Utilize and maintain Library Management Systems (LMS) for cataloging, circulation, and reporting.
- Monitor and evaluate library services and collections, suggesting improvements to enhance user experience.
- Collaborate with other library departments and external partners on projects and initiatives.
- Stay abreast of current trends and best practices in library science, information technology, and archival management.
Required Skills
- Master's Degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Proficiency in library classification systems (Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification).
- Experience with MARC 21 format and metadata standards.
- Demonstrated experience with integrated library systems (ILS/LMS).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to conduct thorough research and provide accurate information.
- Customer service-oriented approach with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a national or public library setting.
- Knowledge of Creole or other local languages.
