Career.zycto is seeking an accomplished and highly skilled Ship Captain to take command of our specialized vessels operating across Canada’s expansive inland waterway systems, with a base of operations supported from Regina, Saskatchewan. As Ship Captain, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of our fleet, which includes advanced vessels deployed for environmental monitoring, specialized cargo transport, and critical infrastructure support on large lakes and navigable rivers. This role is far more than just navigation; it demands comprehensive vessel management, crew leadership, and meticulous adherence to all regulatory standards. You will lead your crew with integrity, foster a culture of vigilance and teamwork, and ensure all maritime laws and company policies are strictly followed.
Your duties will encompass strategic planning for voyages, including route optimization, weather assessment, and resource allocation. You will oversee all aspects of vessel maintenance, coordinating with engineering teams to ensure optimal performance and reliability. Emergency preparedness and response are paramount, and you will be expected to conduct regular drills and maintain a high state of readiness. Reporting directly to our operations management, you will provide regular updates on vessel status, crew performance, and operational challenges. Key Responsibilities
- Command and navigate specialized vessels safely and efficiently across designated inland waterways.
- Lead, manage, and train the vessel crew, ensuring optimal performance, discipline, and adherence to safety protocols.
- Ensure strict compliance with all national and international maritime laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Develop and execute voyage plans, including route selection, weather analysis, and emergency contingency planning.
- Oversee the operational readiness, maintenance, and repair schedules of the vessel and its equipment.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive ship's logs, records, and reports for all voyages and incidents.
- Implement and enforce robust safety management systems, conducting regular safety drills and inspections.
- Manage vessel budgets, supplies, and logistics in coordination with shore-based operations.
- Act as the primary point of contact for external authorities, port officials, and client representatives during operations.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, ensuring the safety of the crew, vessel, and cargo.
- Foster a positive and professional working environment onboard, promoting teamwork and continuous improvement.
Required Skills
- Valid Master Mariner / Ship's Captain license (appropriate tonnage and area of operation for Canadian inland waters).
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive maritime experience, with at least 3 years in command as a Captain.
- Extensive knowledge of vessel navigation, seamanship, and ship handling techniques.
- Proficiency in radar, ECDIS, GPS, and other navigation and communication systems.
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and crisis management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Comprehensive understanding of maritime safety regulations (e.g., SOLAS, STCW, TP 13326).
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic and challenging environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating specialized vessels such as tugs, research vessels, or industrial support vessels.
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment and protocols.
- Advanced First Aid / Medical Person in Charge certification.
- Knowledge of Canadian inland waterway specific regulations and charts.
- Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies or a related field.
